This is the Hallowe'en special, provided as a bonus comic (and, because it's Thor's Day, not replacing the previous day's comic). And it's a little late too, but I wasn't originally going to colour it... it just turned out that way. Check out yesterday's comic if you haven't done so already. I forgot to mention it yesterday, but I saw Reign Of Fire with Exile on Moon Day. It was about what I'd expected; not the most stellar movie in the bits with humans, but the dragons... I'm a sucker for dragons, and damn! if I wasn't satisfied. I do have one complaint: I never really got how the dragons were supposed to be smarter than humans. (Razinus is laughing in quiet contempt right now.) Still, wouldn't want to meet one of those without an armoured brigade to back me up, brains or no. And before I forget, here's another Hallowe'en related item: The Highwayman, which a bunch of other KeenSpace comics are doing. You should probably check that out too; it's an adaptation of the old poem. HISTORY All Hallow's Eve falls on the day before All Saints' Day (or All Hallows), an important Christian feast. It's also based on a pagan feast day, hence the whole 'forces of darkness' thing. In some regions it was even the day before New Year, but it's only in the eighth Roman month (Romans began the year in March). And you'll notice I tend to use the authentic names for days. Thursday is Thor's day, for example. The complete list is: Sun, Moon, Tyr, Odin, Thor, Frey, and Saturn. For those unfamiliar with Norse gods, Tyr (pronounced 'chew') is the one-handed god of war, Odin (or Woden) is the All-Father, King of Valhalla, Thor is the hammer-wielding god of the storm, and Frey is god of fertility. Where Saturn comes into it is beyond me; Saturn is the Roman equivalent of the greek Chronos, if memory serves me correctly, and presided over an annual harvest festival. I bet you never knew days could be so much fun, huh? ART This piece was drawn in pencil, inked, then shaded in pencil and scanned twice. The first scan was in 1-bit colour (black and white), the second in grayscale. I put the two together and used the B&W layer for quick area selection, created a transparent third layer over the top, and coloured inside that. It was quick and I like the way it turned out. Could you people stand to see more of this technique? I might use more in later chapters. Tell me what you think! |
