And so draws to an end the first chapter of Dungeon Damage. But don't despair; another one will head your way very soon! Over the next couple of weeks, I'll be showcasing the gift art I've recieved for Dungeon Damage, as well as a few other things I've done myself. In that time, I'll be working hard on upgrading the site, drawing fresh strips, and putting myself ahead of schedule again. Rest assured, it'll be worth sticking around. If you're confused about anything plot-wise, drop me a line. If enough people are confused, I'll put some additional info into the start of Chapter II. I didn't actually plan to end the chapter right here, but it told me halfway through the computer lettering stage that there shouldn't be any more in Chapter I, so I went with its wishes. In other news, Wizards Of The Coast released the System Reference Document for d20 Modern recently. The SRD, for those unacquainted with such things, describes how everything works. I haven't fully analysed the system yet, but I'm fairly sure I'd have gone a different path. If I ever get around to finishing it, you'll eventually see a d20-based system for running adventures in my science-fiction universe. Right now, the public knows next to nothing about it, but I'll be releasing little artistic tidbits (in fact, you can see one of the characters and some equipment if you look around). That's not to say Modern is a bad thing; it looks like an absolutely wonderful ruleset for generic technological-society-based adventuring. HISTORY You'll notice that everyone's out of their armour at the campfire. Not only is it a bad idea to sleep in armour (you'll probably awaken more fatigued than you were when you went to sleep), but metal armour requires maintenance to stay operational, especially when it's spattered with blood (goblin or otherwise). If you don't clean and dry it, the armour will corrode and become fragile, or disintegrate entirely. While metal normally forms a thin patina of rust on the surface, protecting the substrate, armour is very thin (even plate mail was thin, to allow for the user to actually move, mount horses etc.) and even a little rust can be a deadly thing. You normally wouldn't camp in the woods; forests tend to be home to things with large teeth, especially before civilisation reduced the number of wild predators in Europe. However, when a vampire is flying around, cover is probably a good idea. ART Well, this took far more time than I expected. (It's ten hours late.) But I think it was worth it; even JPGed, it looks sweet. I used stuff outside my window for reference on the shrubs and tree bark and ferns, and I'm also pleased with the toppling stones. You may have noticed that I've stopped drawing random-shaped stones in construction; the Romans wouldn't have used any old rock, they'd have used specifically milled stones, which coincidentally look more natural when collapsing (the human eye can distinguish a distorted pattern in their fall). GAME Well, although Exile doesn't remember it, they did in fact camp in the woods that night. The next day, they travelled to Venice, where they made new friends... and new enemies. EXILE'S RANT Greetings Mortals, Are you ready to die? Hmm, been a while since I played Hexen... At any rate, just a short rant for now, might touch it up later, but I do have one or two things I thought were worth mentioning. First and foremost, I'd like to say a big (if belated) Thank You to whoever it was that sent s/LaSH that clip from Mighty Orbots. (It was JDB. -s/LaSH) It gave me the opportunity to sink further into my nostalgic abyss (it really does seem to be bottomless - hence the late shout out), as well as to show s/LaSH some of my early childhood heros and ramble on at length about something I haven't seen in somewhere between 10 and 15 years (I forget exactly when my brother taped Back to the Future over it). So I still had a rant or two this past week, they just never made it to print... Also, for those familiar with Orbots, I've only just been reminded how frickin' enormous they are when they unite. Since the Transformers anime is currently airing here, I was able to compare the end result to Fortress Maximus. I'm not sure how they get that big, I'm fairly certain they're usually only two or three times the size of grown humans. But I'll never forget my all-time favourite quote: "Hey, I think you've got something, Tor!" "Yeah, a headache!" Go on, laugh, you know you want to... Anyway, the second part of my (no longer quite so) little rant is that I don't know many of you out there are or used to be Pizza Cat fans, but since I mentioned it last week the server I'm getting eps from has crawled. It's taken me all week to get one ep, which still hasn't finished, crawling merrily along at 95 percent completion. Oh and before anyone bitches about the legalities, it hasn't aired here in years and was never released on video beyond the first and last two eps (both times they were called 'movies'). Hmm, not bad for a short rant. Well, have fun, hope you enjoyed today's strip. I like the pretty shiny rocks, don't you? (Note: This was originally written about another strip that didn't have nearly as many rocks in it. -s/LaSH) See you next time, Exile |
